External Description:

Congressional Reporter

We’re looking for a well-sourced reporter to cover Congress for Military.com, including the military and veterans committees with a focus on how congressional actions will shape benefits and the lives of both current service members and veterans. This reporter is expected to also work closely with other members of the news team to cover the Department of Veterans Affairs, along with other pay and benefits shifts in the military services. This reporter must have relationships with key congressional offices to stay ahead of the story on a beat filled with knowledgeable and competitive journalists.

This journalist needs to be focused on being a tireless watchdog for the military community, as well as an interpreter who can break down complex machinations of government without reliance on jargon so that readers can understand what is really happening.

This isn’t a role for someone who expects to be rewriting press releases or taking stenography, but rather a job for those looking to lean on sources to reveal details that matter to the military community. That means the quick scoop that advances a crucial story, along with the feature that shines a light on an unreported or underreported area of the news.

We’re looking for someone who is collegial and collaborative, as reporters from different beats will often work together to develop a story. We’re looking for someone who expects to double or triple byline on a lot of stories.

Responsibilities

  • Daily stories representing a mix of breaking news, enterprise and investigative reporting.
  • Maintain a deep network of source relationships to be competitive and uncover exclusives on a challenging beat in which gatekeepers are stingy with information.
  • Learn the intricacies of military pay and benefits policies and be able to find stories in dense congressional documents and legislation.
  • Have an eye for the real-life impacts of policy and look for opportunities to tell stories outside Capitol Hill.
  • Work occasional nonstandard hours to cover breaking news and lengthy congressional markups once or twice a year.
  • Create engaging and innovative ways to tell and visualize data-heavy stories.

Job Requirements

  • Solid experience reporting at a daily news publication
  • Knowledge and understanding of AP style
  • Deadline-oriented and comfortable multi-tasking
