External Description:

REPORTER AIR FORCE, SPACE FORCE, AND BROADER MILITARY

We’re looking for a tenacious reporter for Military.com, someone who will be a key team member in reporting on issues across the military services and national security space, but with a focus on the Air Force and Space Force. This journalist needs to be a tireless watchdog for the military community, as well as an interpreter who can break down complex workings of government without reliance on jargon so that readers can understand what is really happening. Our newsroom is dedicated to reporting on, and for, the broader military and national security communities. That means an emphasis on the people who serve or have served. We focus on the issues that impact their lives, whether it be the way the VA is handling the suicide epidemic, or the services’ efforts to combat COVID. Our reporters develop specialties, but also cover issues across the military spectrum in a highly collaborative environment. We’re looking for someone who expects to double or triple byline on a lot of stories. This reporter will be our go-to person for coverage of Air Force and Space Force issues, but like all of our reporters, also will need to be able to cover everything from the defense secretary to basic training at Parris Island. We do not believe in being territorial about beats, instead focusing on making sure we’re all telling good stories. This isn’t a role for someone who expects to be rewriting press releases or taking stenography, but rather a job for someone looking to lean on sources to reveal details that matter to the military community. That means the quick scoop that advances a crucial story along with other daily coverage, as well as ambitious investigative and feature reporting that shines a light on unreported or underreported areas of the news. We are open to hiring outside of the Washington D.C. area for the right candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Daily stories representing a mix of breaking news, enterprise and investigative reporting
  • Maintain a deep network of source relationships to be competitive and uncover exclusives on a challenging beat in which gatekeepers are stingy with information
  • Learn the intricacies of Air Force and Space Force culture to help reveal changes in the force
  • Have an eye for the real-life impacts of policy and look for opportunities to tell stories, making complex concepts real by putting a human face on their impact
  • Work very occasional nonstandard hours to cover breaking news and travel as necessary
  • Create engaging and innovative ways to tell and visualize data-heavy stories

 Requirements:

  • Solid experience reporting at a daily news publication
  • Knowledge and understanding of AP style
  • Deadline-oriented and comfortable multi-tasking
