Benefits Editor/Writer

Take ownership of Military.com’s benefits pages while contributing your knowledge as a subject matter expert on veteran, active duty, retiree and military family benefits. 

This editor/writer will keep constant watch over the accuracy and readability of all benefits pages on Military.com, updating them as needed to reflect any changes or updates. As a regular columnist, their clear explanations will be the bridge between complex new or updated military benefits and the veterans, troops and family members who are eagerly waiting to learn and understand them. 

This editor/writer will develop a strategy for tracking all of Military.com’s benefits content while working closely with the editorial team to provide updates on newsworthy changes in a timely manner that best serves Military.com’s wide audience. They will periodically write news columns and/or new explanation content with updates, details and insights on benefits changes. 

The ideal candidate will have an understanding of and a demonstrated proficiency in learning the complex workings of military and veteran benefits, including pay and allotments, the GI Bill program, Tricare and VA health care. They will take ownership of all benefits pages on Military.com. They will have a keen news sense, understanding what makes a story or piece of content important, good or interesting to a military and veteran audience. They will have an eye for detail and a drive to provide news and content that is appealing because it is useful or entertaining (or both) and entirely accurate. Collegiality and integrity is also a must: we're a tight-knit, collaborative team that works hard to gain and maintain the trust of the military and veteran community with balanced, accurate and useful news and information.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of demonstrated expertise in military and veteran benefits
  • Strong writing skills
  • Understanding of SEO principles and best practices or willingness to learn
  • Ability to learn and become proficient in content management systems
  • Passion for innovation and continuous process improvement 
  • Knowledge and understanding of AP style
  • Deadline-oriented and comfortable multi-tasking
  • Comfortable in a remote work environment and able to work autonomously

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all VA and military benefits sections of Military.com.
  • Update benefits pages for accuracy and readability as changes are issued or website needs evolve.
  • Provide news columns or benefits content on an as-needed basis, responding to news, events and website needs.
  • Work closely with Military.com's executive editor, news team, analytics team and marketing section to coordinate strategy and priorities.
